DESCRIPTION:As the summer comes to a close\, we invite you for one more outdoor gathering at the home of Nancy Lanyon (621 S Anchor Street in Rockaway Beach) this Wednesday\, September 20 at 5:30PM. There will be pizza from the Barview Jetty Store and our gracious host will provide beverages. Feel free to bring a chair and or a nibble to share. Chris Farrar\, geologist/hydrologist from Astoria\, will give a brief\, relatively informal presentation focusing on forest hydrology and how the clear cutting of watersheds have an impact on water availability and quality. Chris has recently guided two hikes into the Jetty Creek Watershed.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will also hear about the successful launch of the Astoria chapter of the NCCWP\, updated petition numbers\, upcoming events (including the Who Will Own the Forest rally)\, and a recap of the Rockaway Beach City Council meeting’s discussion of our watershed. On Friday\, September 15\, we celebrate the launch of the Astoria chapter with a film screening of Last of the Ancient Rainforest and a beach clean up with SOLVE the following day. \nThe event will start at 6PM at KALA Hipfish in Astoria\, and continue until around 9PM. There will be food and drink for purchase and time to socialize before the film starts. You can join us in Seaside at 3:30 P.M. at the Big Orange Chair (Hwy 101 and Broadway) Seaside Visitors Bureau or in Portland at 3:30 P.M. at South Hawthorne Waterfront Park for the march to S.W. Park & Montgomery for a rally at 4:30 P.M. \nNCCWP will be rallying with Sun Rise Movement PDX\, and other environment organizations in the Forest Climate Alliance. These rallies will be against the irresponsible industrial forestry practices (clearcutting followed by pesticide spraying) that are decimating Oregon watersheds\, practices which are driven by the need to enrich shareholders who are invested in corporations such as TIAA that are\, in turn\, invested in timber corporations such as GreenWood Resources.  (in the Pacific Northwest\, land owned by GreenWood has the name Lewis & Clark Timberlands.) \nTIAA and other Wall St. corporations are helping to bankroll the climate crisis through their funding of deforestation and fossil fuels. TIAA\, a massive pension fund for teachers and those in the academic\, research\, medical\, cultural\, and governmental fields\, owns Nuveen Natural Capital (a land-focused asset management platform). GreenWood Resources\, an international timber corporation\, is a part of Nuveen. In other words\, TIAA\, Nuveen\, and GreenWood Resources are involved in industrial forestry in Oregon and around the world\, clearcutting the carbon-rich forests that are our best natural solution to the climate crisis. TIAA\, Nuveen\, and GreenWood are helping to drive the climate crisis by land acquisition used for industrial forestry in the Pacific Northwest\, as well as elsewhere in North America\, plus Latin America\, Europe\, and Asia. These practices are contrary to the wishes of many individuals who are invested in TIAA\, and even contrary to TIAA’s own rhetoric. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host an upcoming talk with economist Ernie Niemi who\, for 40 years\, has documented the external costs of timber production in the Pacific Northwest. Niemi’s work has had a special focus on timber workers\, their families and their communities. He will speak with NCCWP about the realities of the economics of the logging industry as it currently stands\, and realistic economic ways forward for our community that are not extractive and destructive. \nNeimi will explain why logging is no longer an economic growth factor for our communities—in fact it actually jeopardizes the real economic drivers on the coast\, which are quality of life and recreation in our beautiful forests\, beaches and rivers. We’re excited to invite you to our first open community meeting of 2022!The meeting will take place Tuesday\, February 8th 11:30AM-12:30pm\, via Zoom (Here is the link to join!) \nWe’ll all have a chance to reconnect and share updates about the important work we are doing to protect the health of our drinking watersheds this year and into the future. \nWe’re also honored to share a special research presentation about the effects of pesticides on our North Coast communities\, and what you can do to get involved. \nThere will be a Q&A session following the presentation\, and we’d love to hear from you about any effects of logging practices in your community. \nA little more about the presentation: \nBryn Clodfelter has finished her senior project at Pacific University\, and published her health study on acute illnesses among Nehalem and Wheeler residents as they relate to the mass spraying of pesticides.   \nHer study was conducted between November 2020 and February 2021\, and concludes that something is driving up the rates of acute illnesses among area residents. Bryn will present her findings and will be available for questions. \nAs we begin this new year\, North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection acknowledges the urgency of the environmental realities of the moment\, and we have recommitted to advocating for Oregon forest management practices that do not impact healthy drinking water or clean air in our communities. (Pacific Time) for rebroadcast of a webinar entitled “The Impact of Forest Structure on Water Quality and Native Fish” \n\n\nIn the webinar\, Gabe Shoeships and Joshua Seeds discuss the importance of complex forest structure for the protection of both water quality and native fish habitat.  Gabe is a Native American who grew up in Oregon.\n\nHe is experienced in environmental restoration and the enhancement of Indigenous First Foods\, focusing on native fish of the Pacific Northwest.  Gabe is an enrolled citizen of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation\, and leads the non-profit Tributaries Network.  Josh works for Oregon DEQ to help communities deal with forest and water quality issues.  He shares perspectives from years of hiking and working in the forests of the Pacific Northwest.\n\nIn coastal Oregon\, forests and fish are facing pressures from growing fire danger\, sky-high timber and land prices\, rising demands for recreation\, inadequate regulations\, and climate change. Speak truth to power!\n \n  \nThis week Stimson Lumber Company started a new clearcut directly above Wheeler\, Oregon. Several volunteers from North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection suggested we organize an informational picket along Highway 101 in downtown Wheeler. \nWe’ll meet on the west corner of Highway 101 and Rorvik St. in Wheeler (near the railroad track – The long-range weather maps show that only light showers are forecast). \nThis event can be accomplished fairly simply. Much like the way we organized\, on short notice\, the Hug Point/Arcadia Beach rally against the Norriston Heights proposed clearcutting. We just need enthusiastic people\, some eye-catching signs\, and handouts with a statement of our concerns. \nPlease Join Us! We already have a few people who have committed to being there. Please let us know if you can help organize or participate in this event. Everyone is to be peaceful\, non-violent\, and respectful\, as always. \n  \nHere are some things you can do to help (other ideas are welcome). \n\nShow up as a participant on the day of the event to make it known that clearcut logging is taking place on the steep hillsides above Wheeler. This is the most important thing you can do!\nIf possible\, make some large\, colorful\, and factual informational signs to hold up so passersby can read them. Use your imagination and make them eye-catching. One idea is to mention that clearcutting of trees is a contributing factor to global climate change. Here are some more ideas: “No Clearcuts! No Smoke! No Pesticide Spraying! No Landslides! No Oso\, Washington!“\nPrint and post around the North Oregon Coast the attached flyer that Glenna Gray made. Or email the flyer to other people you know so that they can attend this information picket.\n\n  \nHere’s some additional information:\nThere’s a new clearcut above Wheeler\, Oregon. Just drive by Wheeler and look up\, you can’t miss it! \nWheeler has already had years of extensive logging on the steep\, slide-prone slopes bordering residential areas. \n\nPlease checkout Wheeler on the Oregon Statewide Landscape Information Maps. This SLIDO mapping lists the adjacent hills behind Wheeler as a red zone\, meaning “very high susceptibility to landslides”\nLogging has already taken place in Wheeler’s watershed that has streams listed as “fish-bearing.”\nThis past logging may have been a contributing factor to causing this watershed to no longer being an adequate source of safe and abundant municipal drinking water.\nStimson\, the owner of the land\, requested and received from the Oregon Department of Forestry a waiver from the normal 15-day waiting period for logging activity on this 97-acre clearcut which has a stream running through it.\nStimson has already started cutting the trees this week!\nThis is RIGHT ABOVE WHEELER! Do you remember the landslide that buried Oso\, Washington a few years ago after clearcutting of the adjacent hills?\n\n \n\nURGENT: Call Stimson and ask them to please not clearcut the last remaining forest above the town of Wheeler! Talk begins at 5:30 pm. \n\n  \n\n \n\n\n\nConrad will discuss the sustainability of wild fish\, risk factors that affect them including current forestry practices\, and\, finally\, what we can do to ensure that wild fish survive.  \n  \nHe plans to delve into issues regarding unstable slopes. In addition\, this presentation will incorporate a dialogue with the audience. \n  \nConrad will also be leading a walk into the Trask River area to observe steep-slope logging that has slide risks. \n \nAbout Conrad\n\n\n\n\nIn 2018 Conrad became the Native Fish Society’s Fellowship Program Director after serving as NFS’ River Steward Program Director (2016-17)\, North Oregon Coast Regional Coordinator (2013-2016)\, and Siletz River Steward since 2010. \n  \nIn his current role\, Conrad recruits and manages a team of skills-based volunteers and contractors (NFS Fellows). These Fellows assist River Stewards with their watershed-specific conservation campaigns and help develop the advocacy tools NFS needs to increase the impact of the work. \n  \n\n\n\n\nConrad completed his undergraduate degree in Natural Science from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma\, Washington and has since worked with non-profit organizations\, academic institutions\, indigenous cultures\, and fisheries consultants\, aiming to advance the sustainable management and restoration of watersheds. \n  \nConrad brings a policy\, research and habitat restoration background with experience throughout the Northwest and Alaska. He is a lifelong advocate for wild fish; his consistent dedication has inspired community action. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nOne of Conrad’s Recent Projects:\nEndangered Species Protections Sought for Oregon Coast Spring Chinook: Nehalem River spring Chinook are an example of fish that may benefit from these protections. \n

SUMMARY:Private Forests\, Public Waters: How & Why Oregon is Failing its Forest Streams
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, May 14\, Mary Scurlock of the Oregon Stream Protection Coalition will discuss the science\, policy and political reasons why current state and private forest policies are failing to protect the public’s interest in clean water and wildlife. \nScurlock’s presentation is another in the series\, “Speaking Truth to Power” presented by the North Coast Citizens for Watershed Protection\, formerly known as Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection. The events\, always free and open to the public\, take place the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. at NCRD 36155 9th St. in Nehalem. \nScurlock’s presentation will review harmful logging and road impacts on water quality and aquatic habitat in Oregon\, compare Oregon’s water protection requirements with those in other states\, and describe barriers to and opportunities for change through citizen action. \nScurlock is the coordinator of the Oregon Stream Protection Coalition\, a 28-member ad hoc group of conservation and fishing industry organizations formed in 2012 to advocate for stronger baseline regulations under the Oregon Forest Practices Act.\nScurlock has extensive experience on forest-water issues in the West\, much of it gained during her 25 years as an advocate at Pacific Rivers Council. Her work has included the development of expert science reviews of numerous state and federal forest policies and multi-species aquatic conservation habitat conservation plans as well as coordination of Endangered Species Act litigation against the Oregon Board of Forestry. \nOther projects included co-authorship of “Entering the Watershed” (Island Press\, 1993)\, watershed protection rule language for the national forests planning rule\, federal watershed restoration \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nfunding proposals and appropriations\, and evaluation of federal forest salvage and riparian thinning practices. Scurlock also spent over five years representing the Forests and Fish Conservation Caucus in stakeholder processes under Washington State’s unique forest practices program. \nBorn in Washington DC but an Oregon resident since 1989\, Scurlock was educated at Duke University (BA\, 1985) and Boston University School of Law (JD\, 1989). \n\n\n\n\nFor more information: Nancy Webster\, 503-355-2516 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
