SUMMARY:RBCWP Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers: Dr. Victoria Holt\, Epidemiologist\, and Jeremy Sappington\,  Public Health Professor Emeritus\nJeremy Sappinton and Victoria Holt\, both retired U of W public health faculty\, will participate in a roundtable discussion on health issues related to widespread pesticide use in industrial forestry. \n  \nThese practices have damaged\, and continue to damage our coastal watersheds and impact the places we live and recreate.  The members of Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection want to ensure that the air we breathe and water we drink is safe.  The aerial spraying of pesticides near our communities remains a concerning public health issue. Other Oregon locations such as Triangle Lake\, Gold Beach\, and Lincoln City have documented human exposure and related health concerns from forestry pesticide spraying in their communities. \n  \nJoin us for this important discussion. We will examine risks these pesticides pose to people\, coastal forest habitat\, and the wildlife our watersheds support. \n  \nReminder: Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection regularly-scheduled public meetings\nSecond Tuesday of the month | 6:00–8:00pm | North Coast Recreation District [NCRD] | Nehalem

SUMMARY:Save Short Sands
DESCRIPTION:You may have heard of the Save Short Sands campaign or have seen the stylish stickers on people’s cars\, water bottles and laptops. But did you know this campaign is still ongoing? \n  \nAs long as aerial spraying of pesticides continues on neighboring Weyerhauser property and seeps into Necarney and Short Sands Creeks\, Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection will speak up for one of our favorite State Parks. \n  \nRBCWP members have started heading out on weekends to educate beachgoers and surfers about the timber activities taking place just behind the emerald curtain. \n  \nOn Saturday\, September 22nd\, RBCWP plans to head out as a group for a community BBQ and to conduct public education from noon to four. In addition to public education\, there will also be time dedicated to asking people what they cherish about Short Sands and what makes it worth saving. \n  \nIf you are interested in volunteering for a couple hours during a weekend or want to help during the BBQ\, contact Nancy Webster at rockawaycitizen.water@gmail.com \n  \nAre You Interested In Volunteering To Help Save Short Sands Beach?

SUMMARY:RBCWP Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection (RBCWP) is excited to announce regular monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of every month\, starting this coming September 11th. RBCWP is a group of citizens who are concerned about clearcut logging\, the spraying of pesticides after logging\, and the effects this has on public health and wildlife habitat in the region of the North Oregon Coast. RBCWP is particularly focused on working towards healthy watersheds. \nThese monthly gatherings are free and open to the public and will begin at 6:00 pm with a social time\, providing the opportunity to become better acquainted with RBCWP members. The guest speaker will begin their presentation at 6:30 pm. After the main presentation\, there will be time for other RBCWP issues and concerns to be discussed. Meetings will be held at the North Coast Recreation District in Nehalem. (36155 9th St\, Nehalem\, OR 97131) \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to see what fellow activists and citizens are doing to protect the water we drink and the air we breathe. RBCWP is always looking for new volunteers to strengthen this dedicated group\, so come and learn more about us. The next meeting will be on Tuesday\, September 11thfrom 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with guest speaker Jason Gonzales from Oregon Wild leading a letter writing workshop. Learn how to express your concerns and keep the public informed through letters to the editor and letters to your policymakers. \nJason will also be talking about Spray Free Coast which is a coalition of grassroots community groups that are organizing along the Oregon Coast to inform local residents about the effects of industrial logging on both Coast Range and Coastal communities. Most notably\, the group is focused on the aerial spraying of pesticides after clearcut logging\, especially logging in watersheds used for drinking water. Currently\, Spray Free Coast has representatives on the Coast\, ranging from Port Orford to Astoria\, coordinating education and outreach\, information\, workshops\, and events in their local communities. For more information: www.sprayfreecoast.com \nOn Saturday\, Sept. 22nd\, RBCWP plans to head out as a group for a community BBQ and to conduct public education from noon to four.  In addition to public education\, there will also be time dedicated to asking people what they cherish about Short Sands and what makes it worth saving.  If you are interested in volunteering for a couple hours during a weekend or want to help during the BBQ\, contact Nancy Webster at rockawaycitizen.water@gmail.com \nArica and Nancy \nFor more information about RBCWP go to the following sites: \nhttps://www.healthywatershed.org\nhttps://www.facebook.com/rockawaybeachcitizens \nContact us at rockawaycitizen.water@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Land Use Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition\, together with local partners Rockaway Citizens for Watershed Protection\, is sponsoring a workshop designed to assist citizens who want to participate effectively in land use planning and other regulatory processes. It takes place on Wednesday\, Aug. 9\, at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30) at the Rockaway Beach Civic Facility\, 276 Hwy. 101 S. The event is free and open to the public. \nLeading the workshop will be two attorneys with the Crag Law Center\, a non-profit that provides legal services to conservation groups. Crag is Oregon Shores’ partner in the Coastal Law Project. \nCourtney Johnson\, Crag’s operations director as well as a staff attorney there\, has worked with Oregon Shores for many years handling issues as diverse as gravel mining\, shoreline armoring\, and LNG (liquefied natural gas) development proposals. She will be joined by Scott Hilgenberg\, who recently joined Crag as a land use legal fellow after serving as staff attorney for Oregon’s Land Use Board of Appeals. \nJohnson and Hilgenberg will provide a primer on how the land use planning system works and how citizens can get engaged\, with special emphasis on the aspects of land use law that apply specifically to the coast. There will be ample time for questions on topics of interest to audience members\, including on such topics of local concern as spraying and other forestry practices. \nFor more information contact Scott Hilgenberg\, (503) 234-0788\, scott@crag.org; or Nancy Webster of Rockaway Citizens\, (503) 355-2516\, rockawaycitizen.water@gmail.com.
