Zoom Talk with Ernie Niemi

April 8, 2021 @ 6:00 pm

Free
Save the date: On Thursday, April 8, starting at 6:00 p.m., North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection will be hosting a Zoom talk featuring economist Ernie Niemi.
For more than 40 years, Niemi has investigated and described the relationship between the natural environment and local economies, in Oregon and elsewhere.  In this presentation, he will draw on his experience to help us develop a solid understanding of both the positive and negative economic effects of logging on Oregon and its coastal communities.  Currently, Niemi is President of Natural Resource Economics, a consultancy in Eugene, and Co-Director of the nationwide Forest Carbon Coalition.

Also, please take a look at “Images that Cry Out for Change,” a report by Trygve Steen, Ph.D., describing the industrial-forestry clearcut logging of the Jetty Creek drainage near Rockaway Beach, and also the extensive clearcutting Stimson Lumber is doing of their land by Eckloff Road near Netarts.
Dr. Steen compiled this report with input from Ernie Niemi and NCCWP member and photographer Peter Karnig.  Read the report and learn about why the Oregon Forest Practices Act needs to be strengthened.  Also, there is information about proposed bills regarding forestry issues that are currently before the Oregon Legislature, including one to enact “timber tax fairness.”  Learn how to get involved.
North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (formerly Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection) is a grassroots group working, through education and advocacy, for better protections of the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the forests that sustain us. healthywatershed.org
